North Bennet Street School, a renowned Boston institution preserving time-honored traditions of fine craftsmanship, seeks an experienced piano technician and teacher to serve as an Instructor for the Basic Piano Technology program. This position begins August 2025 and will be three days per week with extra days added as needed for training.

Position Overview

This role assists in delivering an intensive high-quality program to adult students teaching the practice and theory of all aspects of servicing grand and upright pianos including aural tuning, small repairs as done in the customer’s home, safe use of tools and machines, and business practices. The ideal candidate is a student-centric teacher, able to mentor adults of varying ages, personalities, learning styles, and experience with pianos.Ìý

This position shares the teaching-week with a colleague. This position will teach three days per week, with some weekly overlap with their colleague. The two instructors share responsibility of presenting the theoretical, technical, and practical material involved in the piano technology trade and are responsible for preparation and presentation of instructional content using existing departmental material and curricula and creating new material. Methods of teaching in the program include lecture, demonstration, guest presentations, multi-media demonstrations, and directed projects in the classroom, in workshops, and field trips.

ҹɫÊÓƵapp the Department

All faculty members of full-time career training programs are supported in their work by a dedicated staff including the Provost’s office, the School Academic Administrator, and the Student Support & Career Services office. The projected class size is 16 students, ages 18 and older. There is a classroom for lectures and demonstrations. There are individual tuning spaces for students to practice and receive individual instruction. Guest lecturers visit throughout the year to enhance the student experience.Ìý

Students enter the program at the start of the Fall semester. The daily schedule is 8:00 am to 3:30 pm,Ìý Monday through Friday, during the academic year (September through May). There is a two-week break at the end of December, and a one-week break in March.

Basic Piano Technology Part-Time Instructor Responsibilities

Academic Responsibilities

• Prepare in advance for lectures and demonstrations
• Assist with supervision of student work
• Maintain presence during scheduled class hours to teach students and work with Department Head, other instructors, and teaching assistants
• Provide aural feedback to students on tunings, including equal temperament, unisons, and whole-piano tunings
• Provide feedback to students on regulated action models, with extra consideration for technical exam standards
• Provide feedback to students on piano repairs, specifically those required on technical exam
• Provide feedback on full-piano grand and upright regulations
• Participate in the administration of tuning and technical exams as needed
• Assist in evaluation of student progress, including attendance and grading
• Assist with recommendations for and implementation of education plans for students with different learning styles
• Recommend educational or disciplinary action for students with academic or behavioral issues
• Assist in maintaining a welcoming classroom where individual differences are expected, supported, respected, and valued
• Support the department’s and school’s methodology, position, and strategy
• Attend faculty meetings, advisory committee meetings, and required staff meetings
• Represent ҹɫÊÓƵapp and the program at school events (Open House, Graduation, fundraising events, Friends & Family Reception, and other events)
• Assistance with solving departmental issues that arise
• Professional development, including maintaining currency and proficiency in technical as well as teaching skills
• Attendance at PTG meetings and conferences encouraged

Administrative Responsibilities

• Assist in budget management
• Assist the Department Head and Director of Admissions in the interviewing and selection of students
• Assist in maintaining equipment in optimum condition
• Recommend equipment and facilities improvements
• Assist in coordinating purchases with Department Head
• Order tools and materials
• Maintain a safe environment for students and faculty

Requirements, Working Conditions, & Physical Demands

• Five years experience working in the field of piano technology
• Prior teaching experience is a plus
• Qualified CTE and/or TEC a plus.ÌýÌýÌý
• Registered Piano Technician with the Piano Technicians Guild preferred
• Strong aural tuning skills
• Familiarity with Reyburn CyberTuner preferred
• Familiarity with PTG tuning and/or technical exam standards
• Strong and dedicated work ethic and excellent communication skills
• Familiarity with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office Suite
• Must be able to frequently walk up and down stairs
• Able to push and pull, bend, stoop, kneel, and move around to work on and under pianos and machinery, as well as walk and stand for long periods
• Able to lift, to carry, or maneuver tools and materials weighing up to 45 lbs., using both hands to hold the item in front of you and able to walk across the room with the item being carried, and assist others with same.Ìý
• Able to move from sitting to standing repetitively with ease.Ìý
• Must be able to accomplish close work (paperwork, visual examination, detailed machine work, detailed woodworking, fitting small pieces, reading tape measures and rulers)
• Computer skills and ability to sit at a computer for periods of time a must
• Must be willing to be recorded with video/audio while teaching

Salary & Benefits

The salary range for three days/week is $43,860 – $49,200 depending upon experience. Health, retirement, and other benefits are available.

The President Position

Serving as ҹɫÊÓƵapp’s chief executive officer, the President will have the opportunity to lead an internationally known andÌýÌýaccredited institution that provides world-class training as it advances toward its 150-year anniversary in 2031. Collaborating with the Board of Directors, faculty, and staff, the President will refine the School’s vision and implement practices that uphold the school’s tradition of excellence while navigating the dynamic and constantly evolving landscape of post-secondary education and vocational training. In additionÌýto overseeing all fiscal and academic operations for the School,Ìýthe President will:

• Spearhead the development and implementation of a long-term strategic vision for ҹɫÊÓƵapp, one which prioritizes ҹɫÊÓƵapp’s growth and expansion while considering the dynamic nature of its sector and the shifting demographics locally, statewide, and nationally.
• Refine ҹɫÊÓƵapp’s marketing and public relations practices and be the School’s primary external representative and spokesperson to broaden public awareness, support fundraising efforts, promote expansion, and ensure full enrollment.

• Build camaraderie and teamwork, unifying faculty, staff, students, board members, and stakeholders around a common vision and future for ҹɫÊÓƵapp.

Preferred Background

• A minimum of seven years of senior leadership, or equivalent experience.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position with a starting salary range of $225,000 to $250,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications, with a relocation stipend also available. In addition, ҹɫÊÓƵapp offers a comprehensive and generous benefits package which includes health, dental, group life and disability insurances, a retirement plan with employer contributions, and generous time off. This is an on-site position with some flexibility especially during the summer months to accommodate occasional offsite work.
